Are you experiencing cloudy vision following your cataract surgery? If so, don’t sweat! This condition is called capsule clouding and can occur in some cases. Thankfully, the YAG laser treatment can restore your clear vision in no time! When being treated by our skilled team of eye care physicians, you can be sure you are in good hands.
What is YAG Laser Treatment?
Following cataract surgery, there is a 50% chance that a film of protein will form across the posterior capsule, resulting in capsule clouding. This process usually occurs after a couple of years, leading to blurry vision, and can be easily corrected with the YAG laser during a YAG laser capsulotomy.
YAG stands for yttrium aluminum garnet, which is a crystal that is located within the laser that is used for the procedure. This treatment is completed on an outpatient basis and is quick and painless, helping you to see clearer!
The YAG Laser Procedure
During this procedure, eye drops will be placed into the eye to make the pupil large, followed by an anesthetic eye drop to numb the eye. Patients will then sit at a machine that has a special laser attached. A mirrored lens will be placed on the eye, and then the laser beam will be applied, creating a hole in the capsule. This hole allows rays of light from the laser to move freely toward the back of the affected eye, restoring clear vision. This treatment is painless and usually takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Following the YAG laser procedure, patients will be asked to stay in the office for a while so that eye pressure can be checked. Some blurriness and sensitivity to bright light may occur for a few hours following the procedure. Because of this, patients should not drive for the remainder of the day. Your doctor may send you home with anti-inflammatory eye drops to help minimize inflammation within the eye. Your physician will supply you with specific instructions regarding how to care for your eye or eyes following this procedure for the best possible results. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any post-treatment questions or concerns.
