Many people say that the eyes are the window to the soul, which is why we, as people, take such pride in our eyes. Over time, however, our eyelids can begin to droop, sag, or become puffy, making us look older than we feel. Eyelid surgery is a great, permanent solution for a more rejuvenated and refreshed appearance!
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a procedure done to improve the appearance of the eyelids. It can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, and can be performed for both cosmetic and functional reasons.
This procedure can treat the following:
· Loose or saggy skin that creates folds in the upper eyelids or impairs vision.
· Bags under the eyes.
· Fatty deposits that cause puffiness in the eyelids.
· Droopy lower eyelids.
· Excess skin or wrinkles on the lower lids.
The Eyelid Surgery Procedure
The eyelid surgery procedure is performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. During upper eyelid surgery, an incision is created in the natural crease of the eyelid, through which fat can be removed and muscles tightened. For lower eyelid surgery, an incision may be created just below the lower lash line or inside of the lower eyelid. Through this incision excess fat can be removed or repositioned. Incisions are usually closed with sutures or skin glue.
Following eyelid surgery, swelling, bruising, and dry eyes may occur for some time. A special ointment can be applied, as well as cold compresses to assist with the healing process. Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions on how to properly care for your eyes for the best possible results. It is very important that you use sun protection and use darkly tinted sunglasses when spending time outdoors until your eyes are fully healed.
Results will be permanent, though the procedure will not stop the natural aging process. Ongoing sun protection will help to maintain your results. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions or concerns regarding healing or your results.
Candidates for Eyelid Surgery
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your eyelids or have eyelids that impair your line of vision, you may be able to benefit from eyelid surgery. Ideal candidates are overall healthy without serious eye conditions. A consultation will be needed at our office to determine if eyelid surgery is a good choice for you and your individual cosmetic or functional goals.
