Dextenza
Dextenza is an exciting new medical device that I have begun using at the end of my cataract surgery procedures. This recently FDA-approved device is a very small cylindrical plug, approximately the size of a human hair, which is placed in the tear duct of the lower lid at the completion of cataract surgery. This pellet is made of a dissolvable steroid medication that bathes the eye in minute quantities of medication with each blink. An additional benefit is that patients with dry eye will have more tears while the plug is in the tear duct. The plug dissolves in one month and many patients can be free of drops post-operatively.
