Each year over 20000 Ophthalmologists from around the globe join to discuss, learn , and interact with each other. This year in San Francisco was no exception. In the next few blogs I hope to share with you some of the exciting experiences I had.

This year I spent a significant amount of time deciding which OCT to purchase for the practice. This device produces some of the most amazing pictures of the macula, retina, and optic nerve. I chose the Cirrus by Carl Zeiss because of its excellent pictures of the macula which will further assist in diagnosis and treatment of macular problems such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. This device can actually show the layers of the retina including the actual photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelial layers. The nerve fiber layer can be measured in microns and comparison pictures and computer analysis can help quantitate progression or regression of various conditions. The OCT will be located in the Cinnaminson office. If we need to use it for your diganostic needs I am sure you will also be fascinated as well as us. It is fast painless and the pictures speak for themselves.

Ophthalmologists are once again at the forefront of innovation for cosmetic facial procedures. From Botox to Juvéderm, eye physicians have been regarded as the experts in the original research and development of injectable, anti-wrinkle treatments. Now, Latisse, the first and only FDA-approved
treatment for inadequate or sparse, thinning eyelashes, has been added to the options for facial enhancement. Its origin is directly from a glaucoma medication that ophthalmologists have been using for the treatment of elevated eye pressure.Latisse solution is a prescription medication used to grow longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. Its effect is gradual, and significant improvement in lash growth can be seen by two months. At the onset of
therapy, and at eight and sixteen weeks, I photograph the eyelash area, examine the eyelid and check the eye pressure in each eye with a specialized, high magnification microscope. Patients who have a
history of elevated or borderline eye pressure, patients who are taking glaucoma medication or patients with a family history of glaucoma should discuss this before considering treatment with Latisse. Latisse
solution is applied with a sterile applicator to the upper eyelid only, and only once a day as directed.

As an ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained oculoplastic surgeon, I recommend that patients consider the credentials of the treating physician, their experience with aesthetic procedures, and their knowledge of eye/eyelid anatomy. Eye plastic surgeons are uniquely qualified as specialists of the eyelid and are able to monitor the eye pressure or any potential ocular/lid adverse effects.

Please visit our Latisse page under our cosmetics tab for more information or to view the new Latisse™ commercial featuring Brooke Shields.

I have been happy with the results of the Restor refractive diffractive lens. Alcon surgical has added a new add power to allow a more natural reading position. This is helpful particularly if you want to use a computer. This lens offers an alternative to traditional intraocular lens that only refract light for distance vision.

Restor gives distance vision through the same technique that glasses use, refraction or bending of light.

The up close vision is achieved by a second process known as diffraction when light is broken in small waves.

The strong point of restor is solid reading and distance vision. The potential downside is that patients may have difficulty reading if the light is not bright enough and some patients may experience some glare at night. This side effect has been lessened with Alcon addition of an aspheric design. Centration of this lens critical and surgeon.

Overall my patients have been very happy with the restor but a new challenger ,Technis multifocal has come onto the scene. More about this lens later.

New technology can be great but there is no substitute for patient doctor communication. I pride myself on trying to know what is best suited for each patient and offering what is truly best for them. The main reason patients find me after an unhappy experience with another practice is that other doctors don’t talk to their patients. This may sound silly but many doctors spend too much time looking at an eye and not the patient as a whole sitting in the chair. They do not get to know their patients. Ultimately patient care suffers and these doctors miss out on the best part of medicine, knowing their patients as people. In my practice I want patients to ask questions and hopefully after explaining what problems exist and what options exist, decisions are made that will provide the optimal outcome. This becomes more and more important as the number of alternatives increases. In future blogs I will go over each option including Crystalens, ReStor, ReZoom,Toric, and Lasik amongst others.

As our experience with new lens technologies continues to grow the benefits which I can offer my patients becomes more rewarding with each passing day. Previously with cataract surgery we were satisfied to just make the quality of vision improve. Now with the advent of the crystal HD and the new Restor Asheric I can offer true eye glass independence. Not just seeing better but seeing better without any glasses is a dream come true to many of my patients. In addition to having these wonderful tools to work with, my experienced surgical team at the Wills Eye Surgical Center in Cherry Hill, New Jersey provides me with the unsurpassed support I require to preform the most perfect state of the art surgery available anywhere. There are few things in life more uplifting than seeing a patient smile in amazement the day after surgery. Some things never get old.
